About

El futuro que fuimos is an investigation into the traces of a civilisation that does not belong to any specific historical moment: it could have existed in the past or be yet to come. Who knows whether we humans have been here several times before, in different failed attempts to remain, as told in the Popol Vuh.

Almost all the religions we know share the same essential ideas. From New Mexico to Japan, human beings have been marked by a thirst for deeper meaning, by the conviction that there is a transcendent reality beyond what we perceive, one that gives meaning to the world and to our place within it.

The separation between the sacred and the profane is, historically speaking, relatively recent. For most of human history, the profane did not exist: everything was sacred. Western modernisation brought about a process through which the world gradually ceased to be understood as something mysterious and came instead to be explained through reason, science, and technology.

Yet have we, as a species, transcended the need to search for a deeper meaning in our existence? Do we need, as Max Weber suggested, to re-enchant the world?
